He is the author of Submarine, which has been translated into fifteen languages and made into an acclaimed film directed by Richard Ayoade, and Wild Abandon, which won the 2012 Encore Award. Joe read the opening chapter of Submarine, several of his poems and then asked the students to participate in a ‘middle-class adventure story’ which allowed the audience to decide on the direction of the plot. Joe Dunthorne was born and brought up in Swansea. Students were also invited to a screening of the film during welcome week, which offered up some fascinating questions following his talk. Joe, who studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, is the author of Submarine, which was published to great critical acclaim in 1993 and was adapted into a feature film in 2010. ![]() The highlight of the week for many of our students, however, was a talk by writer Joe Dunthorne. Students met members of the academic and administrative team at the welcome talk, were personally welcomed by Dr Emma Bainbridge (the school Student Support Officer) and had the opportunity to get to know their fellow students at the School of English pub quiz. Unfortunately, the money from Peak’s settlement was quickly consumed by the medications that he needed to stay alive. He countersued the city for slander, due to the high-profile nature of the case. Peak was eventually exonerated for the crime of arson, due to a lack of physical evidence.
